I came home from the hospital last Thursday, and have now entered home hospice care. I am facing the end of my life.
We don't know when this will happen, but it is now time for me to be with my family. Over these last two and a half years, Monika and I have been blessed with the love and support we have received from all of you. What could have been a time filled with only pain, fear and uncertainty, instead became a lesson in generosity and friendship. It has carried us through the darkest of times. For this I thank you.
Now I welcome your prayers for a peaceful passage.
Peace and love,
David

David, you were a wonderful positive and creative influence on Amy & Louie and I love you for that. I do wish you peace. You will be missed and remembered forever.

You and the family are in my prayers
ReplyDeleteYour willingness to share your journey has been a gift for all of us. Teaching us all to savor the moment and each other. For that alone, I am grateful to you.
I pray for your comfort.
With love,
Arlette

David, my heart is so heavy writing this. But what a wonderful life you've had. Just for what you've given to Molly, never mind all of the other people in your life . . . We all love you.
ReplyDeleteMary Leonhardt
David,
ReplyDeleteYou continue to teach us every day -- how to live with grace and courage, how to love, how to find beauty and light even in the darkest places.
You are always in my thoughts and prayers.
Love, Vicky Moskowitz
I'm not really sure I could ever thank you for quite literally changing the way I look at the world. But, that's what you did, and for that, I am forever grateful. Although it's not nearly enough as you deserve, I'm sending you and your amazing family every single ounce of peace and love that I have....
ReplyDeleteMuch love,
Lauren
I love you so much, even though I was only a part of your life for a short time, you changed mine. You are everything I aspire to be. Thank you for everything you have given to us all. I love you.

Dave --
ReplyDeleteI want you to know how privileged I feel to be your student and your friend, and you will be close to my heart always. Your courage, openness, and grace during these past couple of years has been inspiring. The space between us that has been filled by our experiences will continue to vibrate and hum, even in your absence.
Safe travels, old man.
Much love,
Justin
Will pray for you and your family. You entered the correct profession...one that offers the greatest opportunity for immortality. Fifty years from now a former student, now a grandparent, will tell a grandchild, "you know my art teacher taught me that art was..."
ReplyDeleteClearly you instruct all of us up to the very last...
Phil Benincasa
Dave,
ReplyDeleteIt seems you're living your life in the most open, friendly, adventurous and courageous manner, including and all the way through this illness. Thanks for expanding my worldview, such a gift - I feel lucky to have known you.
Sending my best wishes and thoughts to you and your family,
Sarah Attwood
Mr. Prifti I learned so much from you, and you were never even my official teacher, but I feel like every conversation I had with you, I learned something valuable. You don't find people like that in the world, that is why you have always been an idol to me. You are amazingly talented, and amazingly wise, along with being probably the funniest adult I have ever known. I am so thankful to have known you. You're in my thoughts and prayers, always.
ReplyDeleteSam Ghazey
Dear Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI feel so fortunate to have known and learned from you for a brief time in my teens and then to have found you again. Your gifts are plentiful -- your courage, kindness, grace, and most importantly your love for family and friends -- and they inspire so many. And well, they are the seeds you've sown during your time here. And, oh, how they will grow and grow. Thank you for sharing this part of your journey with such openness and generosity and love.
Sending you and your family much peace and love,
Betsy Holden Thompson, CA'87
You have changed so many lives in so many ways...I will never forget how you charted the path mine took all those years ago, even when I didn't know it then. I admire the way you have shared your journey with us...you and your family will be in my prayers.
ReplyDeleteI have never stopped learning from you and you always challenged me in ways I needed. Your presence helped me through difficult times. Thank you for being such a lasting influence in my life. I wish you and yours peace and love.
ReplyDeleteAmanda Brown '03
Dave, I am so saddened to hear the news. You helped Jenna so much and I appreciated your ability to communicate with students. You and your family are in our prayers. May the next life be more generous than this life and do us a favor and photograph it. Our prayers.
ReplyDeleteFred & Noreen McAuley
David,
ReplyDeleteYour humanity, warmth, grace, and intelligence have filled countless lives of students and adults. You will never be forgotten because we have all come to love you. The courage with which you and Monika have shared your perilous voyage toward health has been inspirational and I believe has made us all better people. You will live forever in our minds and hearts. May your ultimate passage be peaceful and comfortable. We send our love and admiration for a life well-lived in the very best sense of that phrase.
Peace, man. And joy for all you have accomplished.
Our love, and blessings,
Sue and Tom
I cannot express how much you have helped and encouraged me, how I loved to pop into your classroom to show you my latest work while in college. I got to where I am today because of you. You are truly a wonderful person and you are such an inspiration to many. I am sending you much love and peace to you and your family.

wishing you comfort and laughter with your beautiful family in your final moments. you will be missed. peace to you. with great love and gratitude beyond words, Abbey Greene Goldman '95
ReplyDeletePrifti,
ReplyDeleteYou are one of the most influential and amazing people I have met in my entire life. Your hilarious and sarcastic nature along with your passionate and energetic teaching style made you the most amazing teacher I've ever had. You inspired me to push myself not only in photography but also in life, and because of this I consider you to be a close friend of mine and one of my biggest inspirations. You will be missed by me and everyone else who was lucky enough to meet you.
You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers, Prifti.
Peace & Love, Bobby Davin
I love you so much, you have this light that I was drawn to, I had to laugh with you, argue with you, and simply be will you as much as I could. You gave me truth, challenged me to do more and had endless support for me, thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteI pray for health and happiness every morning for the people I love, now I also pray for peace for you and your loved ones.
Love Kaitlin Dolan 03'
Dave,
ReplyDeleteYour finest teaching has come over the past two years. You have taught us all about life - its peaks and valleys and how to care for one another. I know you are surrounded by love as you enter this chapter of your journey. My prayers to you and your family,
Susan Erickson
What a joy to know that although this lifetime ends a joyous adventure of the heavens awaits.
ReplyDeleteYou will leave the world a richer place- you have touched and changed the paths of so many, and in the destinations of those lives your spirit will live on.
Prayers and light to you great teacher,
Whitney Doe
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteWhere to even begin? You are an amazing person and teacher. I hope that someday I might be able to look back at my former students and colleagues and to see that I have touched as many lives as you have. Even as I take photos today I think about what Prifti would think of this picture.
Thank you, thank you, thank you... for teaching me photography, for pushing myself and all your students to do what they never thought they could, for being a role model and always being you (even when dressed as a caveman), for always telling it like it is, for accepting and celebrating everyone, for so much more than I could ever write here.
We are all so lucky to have had you in our lives. Wishing you peace and love, laughter and joy as you look back on the wonderful life you have shared with so many others and as you spend the end of it surrounded by those who adore you!
With love and admiration, Lisa Shaner Lopez CCHS '95
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou are such an amazing person and loved by so many people, including myself. You taught me so much not only about photography, but about life. I will always cherish the four years in high school full of memories that you have left me with for the rest of my life. You dressed in that crazy caveman costume every year for Halloween. Coming after school to wash prints with Rachel and Tiger for being late to A block class senior year! Always listening to Moby on the computer during class. These are just some of the many memories I have kept with me. I am blessed to have known you and thank you for everything that you have done for me. You will truly be missed.
Lots of love to you and your family,
Libby
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteMy fondest memories of high school are in your classroom, which was really the only place I didn't feel lost at that point in life. I don't know who I'd be if I hadn't known you. Thank you for all that you taught me.
You and your family are in my prayers.
Much love,
Cara O'Flynn
Prifti,
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing where you are. you will live forever in so many hearts and minds. i bless each day, rainy or sunny, gratifying or disappointing, in recognition of the courage you and others like you have shown in cherishing life and fighting for it. your shining countenance and incredible life energy will never leave our community even when your time has come. blessings, love and peace, Kelli K.
You are an amazing soul. Though our paths have not crossed often since youth, you have remained a presence in my life, and always will. Thinking of you and your family and sending the peace you asked for.
ReplyDeleteWarmest thoughts of peace and love to you, Prifti. May grace more abound.

ReplyDeleteYou are truly am amazing man and I am inspired by you and your strength. You are in my prayers and thoughts every day.
Penuch
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteyours is a light that never diminishes-- so many of us carry that with us today. I am grateful for the friendly hand and heart you always had for me and for any of the rest of us who felt a little lost along the way. No doubt our paths will cross again, but in the interim know how much you will be missed and how much a part of you will stay here with us all. Thank you.
My love to you and your family.
Jenna McAuley
Peace be with you and your family, Dave. You are and will always be an inspiration to me. Thank you.

Prifti,
ReplyDeleteThank you for being an amazing teacher, mentor and friend. Thank you for changing me for the better, being there in the darkest of times and making me see the world with more light. Thank you for giving me memories that never fail to make me smile. May you find peace and comfort in this time.
You, my friend, are awe-inspiring.
Lots of love,

Dear Dave,
ReplyDeleteI sang the song below tonight for you and your family and continue to sing it in my heart as you travel this final leg of the journey. May it be peaceful.
I am sending you light, to hold you, to heal you.
I am sending you light, to hold you in love.
Yours,
Darien Smith
Prifti, you are an amazing friend, teacher, and fan ( "GO CC" at all the hockey games). You inspired me to try new things and always put a smile on my face. I have so many great memories from class, and just being around you in general. You are truly a great person, and I know you will continue to be an inspiration to so many, including myself. Wishing you peace and sending my thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteLove always,
Jesse Bilafer
Dave,
ReplyDeleteI can’t tell you how sad and disheartened I am to hear this news. I hope that I can have more words with you in person but I wanted to let you know how much I love you and how much my friendship with you has meant to me. Your ability to live your life so fully and on your own terms, even under the most trying challenges of the last couple of years is simply amazing. The mark that you leave by that example is profound.
Just as important has been your loyalty, generosity, sense of humor and passion about your art and family. It is a very unfair world that would take such a positive force like Dave Prifti from it so early, but your grace in the shadow of that unfairness gives us back some small measure of equilibrium.
I will miss you so very deeply.
Much, much, much love
my friend,
Pete
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI thought I'd be able to talk with you at another one of your shows, but it seems this may not be the case. I wanted to tell you about the alternative processes class I took last semester. We did a little bit of everything; my final project was done all in kallitypes. I wanted to tell you that I'm finally taking a class with Arno Minkkinen. These are things I wanted to tell you about because these are things you introduced me to that have directly impacted my life.
Someone above stated that they still wonder what you'd think of their work. I had to laugh because I do the same thing all the time. You made everything so easy to learn. You pushed everyone to do their best. I know you have done so much to impact so many people the way you did for me. My time with you and your class are my fondest memories of CCHS. I can only aspire to be half the teacher you are.
Thanks for everything Prifti.
-Desiree De La Cruz, CCHS '06
Our dear friend Dave,
ReplyDeleteWhat serendipitous circumstances brought us to being friends- to becoming cohorts in Masterplation...it has always been I that has benefitted the most from your uncanny wisdom, your passion for art making, your profound love of family and dauntless sense of humor. You've made us laugh, in the midst of the absurd impossibility and continue to lead by your example. I feel so so blessed to have known you and to be able to call you friend. THANK you so much, from the depths of my soul. Thank you.
This is not goodbye, this is just me saying, "until soon."
All our love,
Kym and Vincent
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteIt was truly a honor to have you in my life. Your energy brought joy, challenge and light to all of our lives. The examples you set forth will continue to raise the bar for me, live life with strength, passion, love and most importantly happiness.
I will miss your hugs, serving you at the cheese shop, visiting your class room, seeing your freaky baby doll head truck, your classic power strut.
You have forever made an impact on me and I'm pretty certain I'm not the only one. Kyra and I just got off a very long phone call, processing all of this, processing you. We have been touched to have you in our lives. I can assure you I'm meeting plenty of outrageous art kids that will challenge my views just as you have.
Thank you for believing in us. Thank you for challenging me. Thank you for being the Prifti we all know and will forever love deep in our hearts.
Your student,
Anna Stabler
You may not even know it, but I can't even begin to tell you how much you have changed my life, and the doubtless dozens before mine. You were a part of the most important year of my life thus far, and I can't thank you enough for that.
ReplyDeleteNot only do I get to brag about having had the honor of having you in my life, but I can also say you bestowed upon me the coolest nickname ever.
Thanks for the crash course on how to live properly.
See you in another life.
Much, much love,
Danger
Prifti,
ReplyDeletealthough I only really got to know you during my second semester of senior year, I feel so lucky to have been one of your students. You taught me so much about photography, but even more about life. I loved every minute i spent your classroom. I will always have fond memories of the "grilled cheese" button you "installed" on one of the photo machine and. I will always remember your ridiculous, but even more fantastic music that you would blast in the photo room, like the river of babylon. I feel so lucky to have gotten to know you, even if it was for a short time. You are an inspiration to everyone who has been lucky enough to get to know you. I will always be thankful for everything you taught me.
You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Much Love, and Peace
Will Moss
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteWhen I picture you, the first thing that comes to mind is your plaid button ups and ability to quick-fire insults at Mya and Brianna. You were the first person I have ever shed tears over, and the first teacher that I have ever truely loved. Seldom do any of us meet a person as kind and generous as you, and all of us at CCHS were blessed to have you in our lives. Men since the beginning of time have been concerned with their legacy. Some strove for medals or some kind of recognition; but not you. You taught what you loved, with enthusiam and care never asking for anything in return. Your legacy will live on through your children and the many students whose lives have been changed by you. We will always remember the lessons you have taught us-from the little things like remembering not to rest darkroom trays on the table, as well as the big lessons like what is really important in life. I say this with the greatest of certainty that you are one of the greatest men that any of us will ever meet, and personally, I will be forever influenced by you.
Until next time,
Chenara <3
Dave. First off, I love you. You're family. Even though we haven't seen each other for almost 20 years. If we hadn't met I might have never experienced the world as a creative soul. You were the first person to ever look at some silly photo that I took and believe that I actually had something to offer other than fisheye skateboard photos. I remember that day like yesterday when your eyes lit up when I showed you a tiny 2x3 test strip print of my German Shepherd Mara. Since that day I've never turned back. Your passion for art, integrity and the truth was one of the biggest turning points in my life.
ReplyDeleteBut more importantly than that you are my friend. Always will be Prifti!!! BIg hug and love.
- Gunars
dave and monika,
ReplyDeleteyou and your family are in our thoughts and prayers...as evident by the messages left today, and in the past, you've made a difference in every life you've touched...including mine. a photograph of the wellfleet dunes hangs on my wall...a reminder of the trip we made between semesters in 1980 to the cape. i'll hold that memory as well as many others close to my heart. dave and monika if there is anything you need now or in the future....a visit, a call..whatever, please let us know.
peace and love,
alan and jan
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou're the best! We forged a great friendship those first two year's getting the girls up and running as a CCHS hockey team, times that we will remember forever, what fun we had. Then my kids had you as their teacher for photography, they learned so much from you. Thank you for challenging them to aim for the best pictures they could take, it is paying off for them now.... We love you and our thoughts are prayers go out to you and your family.
The Fabrizio's
David,
ReplyDeleteYou have no idea, but for years I have mentioned you and Monika to folks you have never heard of because you both have always set an example of creativity, intelligence, and integrity. You're also, literally, the funniest guy I have ever known. You may not remember a very proper going-away party decades ago for Jens and Yvonne from Sweden, and their work colleagues collected money and gave them a GIANT flag (I can't remember whether it was an American or Swedish flag), which apparently is a traditional gift for Swedes. There was general oohing and aahing over the gift, while I was silently wondering what a person would do with such a flag. I overheard you very quietly say, "Great, now all they need is a hundred-foot flagpole." Anyway, it is one example of the way you have made me and countless others laugh hysterically. When I look at the picture of your beautiful family, I am so impressed with the legacy you are leaving on earth. Nobody will ever leave a better one. God bless you, Monika, Amanda, and Lucas.
David,
ReplyDeleteI am a lucky man, a better man, a more humble man, and a far wiser man for having known you and watched you perform your magic with young people. Some of the best teachers will cause students to think and to continue to learn. The truly great teachers, of which you are one, will cause students to see the world in a different way and to consider their own place in the world in a different way. Very few people can claim they have profoundly impacted thousands of people in the course of their lifetime. You are one of those people. People comment on your humor, but it is your love of life and love of others that is ever-present in every moment of an interaction with you. Even today as you share your journey with friends, colleagues, and, possibly, admiring strangers, you continue to profoundly impact others. Thanks for all you have done for so many.
You, Monika, Amanda, and Lucas are and will be in my prayers.
Art Dulong
You are all in my thoughts and prays, as you have been for many months. Your generosity in showing me the wetplate process that afternoon at your house touched me deeply, and your approach to life and art are inspiring. Peace be with you.
ReplyDelete~Suzanne Révy
The school is less good without you here. I miss seeing kids taking pictures with that massive camera in the back of your truck. I get very sad every time I walk by your room.
ReplyDeleteOn the happy side, I am forever grateful that Savage will forever be known as Pat the Bunny, and Goldy will be known as 'The Captain', and slow-players in any game will always have their own special name...
(Aren't you glad I didn't bring up the yeti?)
On the more serious side, I've seen you communicate things to kids both in and out of the classroom that were truly profound and deep. Those are things I'll never forget... I've tried to learn from how you communicate with kids, and to emulate it to the extent I can.
Thanks for everything you've shared. You and your family are in my thoughts.
Steve
Prifit,
ReplyDeleteIt seems like just yesterday I was a little sophomore in your class. You have taught me more about living and loving in the few years I've known you than I could ever hope to learn in a lifetime. You pushed me to be the best I could and looking back on highschool many of my memories are filled fondly with you. Your vibrant energy and persistence will continue to inspire me to pursue my dreams. I was truly blessed to have you as a teacher.
So much love forever and always,
Andrea basque '11
dear prifti,
ReplyDeleteyou were the first to see me and believe in me wholeheartedly; my love and gratitude span over oceans and mountains to you, monika, lucas and amanda, always.
your friendship is one that i honor and treasure. i am in awe of your sincerity and laughter with me as i've grown and feel so blessed for it. your love still nurtures my soul and gives me the courage to continue seeking and finding my way. you are a wonder and a marvel in the ways you've inspired and cared for us all.
i love you very much and wish you peace.
you are always in my heart.
a massive bear hug,
xo diane
Mr. Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou and your photography and video production classes truly changed my life. Both classes lead to deep interest and love for photography that continues today. I've made a connection with my dad through photography and think of your classes when he and I go out to take landscapes. Your encouragement and support (and college recommendation) lead me to dabble in film throughout college as well.
Most importantly though, I met my future wife in B-block photo class way back in 1998. We recounted our time together in your class at our rehearsal dinner and have always spoken fondly of you and our memories of that class.
May peace be with you,
_James Sheehan
I will always cherish the memories we had growing up together in our church. You always had a way of making everybody laugh that was a great gift.
ReplyDeleteAll my love to you and your family,
Karen Dono
David, It was not the proximity that brought me to your room almost daily. Though not my teacher, you were. Though not your audience. I was. Though it was not your job to brighten my day, you did. I've (we've all) missed your presence the last couple years and I'll continue to send the thoughts and prayers. Nancy has been doing a wonderful job, but she'll have to forgive me when I enter A1 and just stand there. You've taught so many how to think about photography differently, but you've taught all of us how to think about life differently. All my love, Al.
ReplyDeleteDavid,
ReplyDeleteCompañero, amigo y hermano de la vida.
Buen viaje.
Eric Pohl
David,
ReplyDeleteYou are the most courageous person I have ever met. You have taught me so much in just reading from this blog...Life truely is a gift...although I have not seen you in many years, I have kept up with you through this blog and have prayed for you through it all. I wish you peace..
Sincerely,
Elaine
David,
ReplyDeleteI am going to miss your smiling face. Although we did not cross paths often, you always had a twinkle in your eye and a friendly hello. You set a high bar for how to provide a welcoming, caring environment for students and it is inspiring to read and hear all of their tributes.
Wishing you and your family peace, courage and love in the weeks to come.
Peace, love and prayers,
Cricket
David, I just found this blog, from Bunny. We've praying for you at the Thursday night sangha and will not stop. We haven't seen you in a long while, but you and your family are in our thoughts. I'll never forget the tour you gave us of your radiant heating -- I think of you practically everytime my feet hit cold tiles. My father dealt with the same illness; he was also a funny, smart, kind guy. I'll be thinking of you.
ReplyDeleteLove, Veronica & Gerard, your former Maynard neighbors
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou are the truest inspiration to ALL. You are everyone's number one fan. Your voice will be heard for years to come, "Go, CC" at every game, constantly encouraging everyone to do their best. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Love Always, Carroll Willa
What does one really say in a time like this...Sitting here heart broken because Mr. P you are one of the greatest! You opened so many eyes to the arts including mine. I will always remember you as one of the funniest and most passionate teachers at CCHS. May this time with you family be peaceful. Please know you've fought a good fight, one that you should be proud of! I have always admired you, maybe one day we can all be so great.......
ReplyDelete-Sending love to your entire family!
D. Watford-Jackson
David,
ReplyDeleteYou have been in my family's thoughts and prayers for a long time. (My son remembers the swing and the chickens, too!) Your courage and will to live life to the fullest are inspiring. I now cherish every day because of you. We all have long admired your amazing ability and tireless efforts to reach every student by sharing the wonderful world of photography. You also had these amazing conversations with kids that I overheard, full of valuable lessons of life. I, too, have learned about photography through your students' works and their explanations to me. I am still working on my poker game.....
I send you and your family peace, love and prayers. You touched so many of us. Thank you and God Bless you,
John Bookis
Dave, you're amazing and you're brave. This blog has been incredibly important both for keeping us connected to you and for shedding light on circumstances we will all face. I'm thinking about you Prifti as I go through my day. I'm not surprised that you've impacted the lives of so many in such a positive way. I have so many vivid memories, although from so long ago. Since they involve you, of course many of them are funny. Here's one classified as ridiculous -that day we decided to explore that abandoned house you had discovered. We went there more to scavenge than to photograph. Remember the ghost-buster arm bands? I remember Don tripping on the way out and his stack of Life Magazines went flying. Much love to you Dave and to your family from Anne F. in California.
ReplyDeleteDave- Have thought of you over the years and particularly over the last couple where I have read your inspiring and thought provoking posts. You truly are a timeless man and as you go forward you leave behind a legacy like no other. It has always been my claim to fame that I was a student in your very first photography class at CCHS. I remember you always as a wonderful teacher with an open heart and a zest for life. Peace and love.
ReplyDeleteJulie Finocchio
Prifti, I feel so lucky and honored to know you. When I arrived at CC I soon learned that you were at the heart of the school in every way. Thank you for changing the lives of so many students and colleagues for the better, by virtue of your remarkable courage, humor, humility and talent. You will be loved and remembered and cherished always. Bon courage to you and your family, with all of my gratitude and admiration.
ReplyDeleteCaitlin
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteA few days ago I went back and read this blog from the very beginning. Through shrinkage and surgery, success and frustration, it really has been a journey. A journey marked by hope, courage, perseverance and love. But your words of overwhelming gratitude are what speak loudest of all. The countless times you stop to say thank you- whether for healing thoughts or hot meals- say more about you than this fight ever could.
In the darkest of times when most might turn to self-pity, you turned to thanks and humility. You made the choice to dwell not on the senselessness of a situation, but on the good in people that came out of it. Your faith in life, and in people, has never wavered. If this isn't just a testament to your character, let it be a lesson for all of us on how to life a beautiful life.
There is no way to measure this loss, least of all by words. So rather we will measure your legacy in the lives it has forever changed. For all of us who gained in spite of this unthinkable loss- my only hope is there is some peace for you in that. The inadequacy of your years will be more than made up for in the moments you have inspired.
For every picture that I take, I will think of you. For every right decision made over a convenient one, I will draw from your example. For every time I experience joy that can only be brought by loved ones, I will toast to you. And for every dream followed, I will thank you. A life that makes others want to live theirs better- I cannot think of a more admirable one than that.
I wish you eternal peace and love, this side or the other.
Lydia Abend
Dear Dave, I feel so fortunate to have taught with someone so passionate about their work, and about the kids they worked with. Your inspiration was for all, and it is so great to see how many of your past students have expressed their gratitude to you. My prayers to you and your family in finding some peace in your journey.
ReplyDeleteJoe Hehn
Mr.Prifti,
ReplyDeleteOnly have had you as a teacher for the first couple days of seniors year and looking forward to taking your class since my freshman year.Always being able to see you in the photo room made me excited for i'd be able to be taught by you and to learn from you. Right up front you showed the class all your highest quality's and that is something i will always remember from my friends who you have guided and from the CC community you have showed all of us one of the truest lessons in life. Praying for you and your family always
Camilla Tamargo
Dave,
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you and Monika came to NC an payed me a visit after so many years. It was a great day with lots of laughing and good stories. You have been in my thoughts every day since. My prayers are with you.
Cathy Griffin
Dave -
ReplyDeleteFrom all those that have posted comments, and from knowing of all those that can't bring themselves to, we all know how many lives you've touched over the years - and you've done it so effortlessly - it seems to be part of your very being.
Whenever I saw you, more than anyone else, I knew that the conversation we were going to have would be REAL, whether about music or art or perspective or kids or the system or meditation or photography or herbal healing or that greek bronze helmet I brought to you one day or about me or about you. You've always been a great source for refreshing oneself and reminding oneself of what "it's all about" - what's really important and what you shouldn't sweat over. You will always continue to be that source. When we think of all the people that you've impacted, to me that means you'll always be here. You'll always live on in me in how you've shaped my views and others in all the ways being described here.
After all these years of knowing you - then you taught my son. And on the ride home last year he said "I'm doing art for the first time in my life." And I smiled and enjoyed a deep breath and knew you had done that for him.
Thank You For It All,
Anthony Beckwith
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou are such an inspiration to me. You taught me so much about photography, helped guided me into finding what I love about photography, and showed me how I should live my life everyday to the fullest. I loved being one of your students and I will never forget the great times I have spent with you, like cheering along with you at the girls hockey games. Thank you so much for everything Prifti.
Love
Amanda Fabrizio
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI feel so blessed to have had you as a teacher. When I look back on my cchs experience, I always think of you.. Your guidance and compassion that extended way beyond the classroom has always stayed with me and shaped who I am today. Thanks for all the support, intriguing conversation, many laughs, and of course for instilling my passion for photography. Im happy to tell you that I always smile and think of you when I hear Al Green because you introduced me
to his music one day after school in the darkroom.
You have touched the lives of so many and the way you lived your life is an
inspiration to all of us.
You are in my thoughts and prayers. I send love and peace to you and your family.
love,
Jess Wiley
I am so lucky to have had the chance to work with you Dave. Thinking back over 20 years of Alt Pro characters and events it was always the staff of the art department who reached out to them first. You set standards with a wit and honesty that set you apart from all others - you, like the skin horse in the Velveteen Rabbit, will live forever.
ReplyDelete“What is REAL?" asked the Velveteen Rabbit one day... "Does it mean having things that buzz inside you and a stick-out handle?"
"Real isn't how you are made," said the Skin Horse. "It's a thing that happens to you. When [someone] loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real."
"Does it hurt?" asked the Rabbit.
"Sometimes," said the Skin Horse, for he was always truthful. "When you are Real you don't mind being hurt."
"Does it happen all at once, like being wound up," he asked, "or bit by bit?"
"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't often happen to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept.
"Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand... once you are Real you can't become unreal again. It lasts for always.”
― Margery Williams Bianco, The Velveteen Rabbit
Until we meet again Dave, in this life or the next.
Kathy Pendergast
Dave, you've always had the touch that reaches into people's souls, and when that happens you will be forever there. No-one who knew you will ever forget how that touch changed their lives forever. This is a sad moment for all of us who knew you, but your courage, your humor and your spirit will never be gone from us. For the last few years, your body and your spirit have been at war - and your spirit wins. God bless, and a big hug. Thank you for being so very you.
ReplyDeletePolly Attwood
Dear David -
ReplyDeleteI write with a heavy, but still joyful heart, for all that you are and will continue to be. I celebrate you.
Do know that you have been in my thoughts for a very long time. I have been following your amazing blog since the very beginning and daily in the last few months. I very much regret, due to school, that I was not able to attend your most recent show openings, but know I was there, all along.
You are such an extraordinary spirit, one that is so generous and you will continue in all of our hearts and minds. I thank you for the time you spent with me and my classes over the years. (Besides the incredible work and your keen insights, always having cookies and lemonade is a fond memory, as are your chickens.) I am also proud and honored to have shown your amazing work, several times. I am blown away, but not at all surprised, by the comments and stories here.
Being a teacher comes so naturally to you, and it is felt in every word of this blog and all of your interactions. It is one of the most important callings and you are indeed a model for all of us. So many lives touched, changed forever, with your passion, insight, knowledge, and humor. Thank you for all that you have done, and all that you do.
I wish you joy and comfort in this time with your family. Bruce and I are sending warm, loving thoughts.
With gratitude and peace, Leslie
Dave,
ReplyDeleteThroughout my time in Massachusetts, you have been such a welcoming spirit. I remember the time you brought Lucas and Amanda to meet Jackie (who was about 3 or 4 days old). I always felt welcome and appreciated. I want to thank you for the blessings you have bestowed on me and my family. Know that you are one of the most loved teacher. I aspire to be like you. Thank you also for just being you.
Sharon, Jerry, Jackie, & Candice.
David,
ReplyDeleteI am drawn at this time to one of my favorite sayings, "When it's all over, it isn't who you were but whether you made a difference." There can be no doubt you are one of those special people who have made a tremendous difference to more people than I am sure you can imagine. May the love from all of us who you have touched bring you comfort now and make this last journey one of peace.
It has been an honor calling you a colleague and a friend. You will always be with us.
Karen Bushey
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteTears flow from my eyes as I write these words...I think it's hard for any of us to fathom saying goodbye to you. I can honestly say that it has been an honor to know you. Even though I never have the privilege of having you as a teacher, you always made me feel welcome every time I came by to bug someone in your class.
I'll never forget the time you stopped one of my friends from finishing my hair in the lunchroom because you wanted to take a picture of the shape my hair made. I remember thinking that it was such a strange request, but I was happy to do it.
Prifti, thank you for making such an impact on so many of our lives. We love you and we will never forget you.
Sincerely,
Shawna Fields

Dave,
ReplyDeleteYou were one of my favorites at school, always warm and generous with a great sense of humor. I don't know anyone who didn't love you. Your impact on the students was huge. Your contribution will be everlasting. We will never forgot your delightful self! You will be in my thoughts and my heart for a long time. Thanks for your friendship.
Love, Susanne Harrison
Dave,
ReplyDeleteThank you for being an inspiration! Love the photos you took of the trees in the Asbet River. You are a true artist in all ways!
Sending you love and light-
Jiela
Dear Dave,
ReplyDeleteI don't even know where to start. First of all I want to thank you for the shelter I found in your basement dark room and in the generosity of you and your family for sharing your home and love with me and so many others. You always seemed to have a few waifs and strays about the place! I don't think when I signed up for a high school photography class I expected to come away with such a good friend. You will be missed as a mentor, a teacher, an artist but most especially as a friend. I think if I manage to give out half as much love in my lifetime as you have so far in yours then I will consider it a success.
I wish you a peaceful passage, surrounded by those you love best and by the thoughts of all those that love you.
Love,
Juliana
Dave,
ReplyDeleteAs you reflect, celebrate how you have positively influenced so many through your teaching, including both our children, one of whom went on to pursue a career in graphic design, inspired by the creative directions in which you led him. You have taught all of us so much about living with grace in the face of adversity, about fighting as hard as you can for one's health, and about knowing when the battle can no longer be won. I have so enjoyed getting to know you even better these last few years. We will miss you so much, yet know you will be watching over us all from that next realm, wherever that may be. Wish you could send us photos from afar.
Our prayers continue and intensify for you and your family in these sacred moments you are now sharing. Bill and I send our love, blessings, and wishes for your comfort and peace in the coming days and we wish you a peaceful passing.
Love,
Sherry
Prayers and love you have, from a former student whose artistic creativity was awakened in the CCHS dark room under your inspiring watch.
ReplyDeleteYour posts here over the last few years have been sometimes hopeful, sometimes melancholy, but always moving and always thoughtful, just as my memories of you are.
Peaceful passage indeed, and I'm glad you're able to spend your remaining time with Monika and loved ones, all of whom I'm holding in my thoughts.
Love,
Rachel Ropeik
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou are the singular reason I became a photographer. You are my biggest hero and my greatest inspiration. I am truly blessed to have met you and had your influence on my life. you are in my prayers.
Courtney Crawford
Prifti, you have changed my life. You taught me to see art not just on the walls of museums, but in the world around me. Thank you; I will never forget you.
ReplyDeleteRachel Yamron
Dave and Monika, Jerry and Lobsang inform us via Gaby that all the children at Gatsal are praying for you! You and your family are so remarkable, so special, so inspiring, our hearts are overflowing with prayers and prayers. Thank you for everything Dave! Every single time we held a cafeteria session as 2volunteer, you would stop by, share a story, give us your love and joy, make us smile...how many people in this world care as much as you, such a genuine, authentic person? We wish you much peace. monika, Lucas, Amanda, we are thinking of you, praying for you.

hi prifti.
ReplyDeletei just wanted to tell you how much your company means to me and how happy i am that i got to know you. i remember the first day of school when i didn't know anyone and was completely lost, i came into the photo-room and you told me that i was always welcome. and then i decided to take photo and it was so fascinating and fun. it opened a whole new world for me.
i'm taking a photography course now and we were supposed to bring to class pictures by a photographer we admired. i brought some of yours. my teacher really liked them. now you have fans in the land of ice.
you are the coolest teacher/person i've met. it was so good to come into the photo-room and share my lunch break with you and all the crazy photo-kids. all the funny things you said. i'm so glad i got to know you the year i was at cc, prifti.
here's a little poem(song) i want to send you:
Vem kan segla förutan vind?
Vem kan ro utan åror?
Vem kan skiljas från vännen sin
utan att fälla tårar?
Jag kan segla förutan vind
Jag kan ro utan åror
Men ej skiljas från vännen min
utan att fälla tårar
best best best wishes
ég hugsa fallega til þÃn, sjáumst sÃðar!
ást og friður,

ReplyDeleteWe are all blessed to have had you in our lives. You have touched so many people - the stamp you have left on their lives is something to be proud of. I am honored to have you as a friend and will never forget all the fun we had.
Tons of love and prayers of peace for you!
I love you,
Laurie Giunta Fortunato
Mr. Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou are one of the most amazing teachers I have ever had (and I am STILL in school almost 10 years after leaving CC). I think about you often as I still drive by your house on a daily basis and feel fortunate this blog was just passed along to me today. You are an amazing individual and I am blessed I know you. I wish you peace always.
Much love, Kay Metcalfe CC '02
Dave,
ReplyDeleteYour energy, intellect and passion have always been inspirational to us.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Monika and the kids.
With fond memories from Hobart Park and cold hockey rinks,
Jim and Doris
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteReading your blog brings tears to my eyes. You are such an inspiration to so many people, including myself. You have taught me so much and I greatly thank you for that. I will always remember your adventurous stories and your hilarious personality, always bringing a smile to my face. You believed in my passion and only excepted my very best. You taught me to strive for excellence and never give up. Because of you, I fell in love with B&W photography. You will always be my inspiration because of your passion for art, adventurous stories, and everlasting strength.
Love you Prifti and I'll miss you so much! You will never be forgotten.
Sending prayers and love to you and your family.
Isabel Materne
David, you are my beautiful friend forever and ever and ever. I have grown and been inspired by the hospitality of your heart, humor, vision, and some of the best times of my life were in that Brighton House and through our days at Yale together when you and Monika immediately took me in. There are no words to describe my heart now. I will wish to meet you again and again and again, your smile is tattooed upon my heart David, I love you so much!
ReplyDeleteAnne K, aka Korndingo forever--still have that wooden flying corn you made me!
David
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to believe that I am writing this now. In the eight years I have been honored to know you, you have offered your generosity and support to Doug and I as you have done for so many. Your humor was my favorite part of being with you, you are so funny and smart! Thank you for including us as part of your family. I will cherish many memories sharing meals, playing cards and laughing. My garden grows more beautiful each year because of you. You will be deeply missed.
One belief is that we are here on this earth once, twice, some many times until we get it right and then we are free. You did it right.
Praying for your peaceful return.
Until we meet again.
Love,
Sara
Prifti, whenever I imagine walking into the A building, I always hear your voice coming from somewhere in the darkroom. You are never without a big, beaming smile. This is what I remember most and will carry with me to share with others...
ReplyDeleteAlways,
-- Liz Popolo, CCHS '04
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteIt seems like yesterday that I was sitting next to you during A block intro photo listening to you tell me off for not centering my subjects in my pictures. Now every time I take a picture I think of that moment and wonder, “What would Prifti think about the framing of this picture? Is my subject framed properly” Since the first day of intro photo I knew that I would learn a lot. You taught me how to push myself in photography and always look for new ways to make my photos better. You have been a huge inspiration to me. I am honored to have had you as a teacher and to have received an award from you. Your sarcastic humor which always left me in stitches, your welcoming personality, energy, passion, and words of wisdom will be missed. Thank you for everything you have taught me and being a part of my life. I will never forget you.
Peace and Love,
Isaac Cadwell-Levine
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou were, and continue to be, one of the best teachers I have ever had. So full of effervescence and enthusiasm, you made everything from development techniques to daguerreotypes a joy to learn. The time spent in that classroom flew by and before I knew it you were helping me send in portfolios to college. I just read the post above mine and laughed out loud thinking of that squirrel picture you used as a demonstration of poor framing. We have a billion squirrels on our college campus and every time one scampers past I honestly think...how on earth would someone take a good picture of a squirrel? Not sure it could be done but if anyone is the man for the job it would be you. You have changed my life, changed the way I look at the world, both through a lens and without one. I thank you for being such an incredible influence on the lives of so many students, myself included. I wish you peace and happiness, you are so incredibly loved.
Camilla Vogt
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI knew you were the real deal the first time I laid eyes on your work, but never did I think you would teach me so much without ever meeting face to face. I wish you peace.
Bill
Dear Mr. Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI never had you as a teacher at CCHS, but by the amount of times your name came up in conversations in between the L building and the cafeteria, really make me feel like I did. Story after story, your legend grew. My sister has been friends with Amanda for a long time, so I feel like I've always kind of known you through association in all aspects of my life.
Coming from a similar circumstance in my family, I can really say that you are and always have been doing the most important things you can possibly do in life. From embracing your passion for photography, and making a career out of something you love, to giving all that surround you, the gift of your knowledge and verve. Everyone should follow in your footsteps, and live life to the fullest.
I go to school with Amanda now after all of these years of association, and you have definitely raised her to be a kind-hearted, and great person, which truly makes me think that all of the legends weren't legends at all. but facts. Facts from people who truly love you and respect you.
"Life is for living, and we all know,
That we don't want to live it alone."
A quote from one of my favorite songs, not all that original, but that doesn't make it true.
-Matt Cronin '07
David,
ReplyDeleteSending love, prayers and peace to you and your family. You inspire me to be a better person and teacher. Thank you.
Carla
I don't know where to begin to tell you how much you have shaped my life. You took a childhood intrest and shaped it into a passion that has become my career, my hobby, and as my husband would say, my obession. Thank you for being such an inspiration. Thank you for showing me that you can do photography as your job as well as the art that moves your heart and enriches your life. I wish you peace and comfort in your passage.
ReplyDeleteThank you,
Molly Leonhardt Plann
CCHS '97
I am not going to tell you how much you have impacted my life, however you have very much. I just wanted to observe the legacy that you pioneered and that continues with all of these wonderful people who chose to be a part of your life. The sheer amount of lives that you have touched, the differences that you have made, is heart-warming, and makes me glad to have spent as little time as I had to spend with you. A year and a few weeks was not nearly enough to know such a man as you. I hope you gain courage and solace from these words, and those of the ones that commented before me.
ReplyDelete-Adam Beckwith
I am going to miss you so much, you are the best teacher iv ever had. you are an amazing photographer and person, i looked forward to your class everyday because of your amazing sense of humor and great feedback. You are such a great person, and it is really hard to find people like you. You have influenced me and taught me so much. I am so lucky to have know you and had you as my teacher. I will miss you so much.
ReplyDeleteLove, Miranda Gaehde
Dear Dave and Monika,
ReplyDeleteTh Hills will certainly pray for a "peaceful passage" for Dave. We have nothing but the fondest memories of our times together at Hobart Park.
"May the LORD bless you and keep you; may the LORD make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; may the LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:22
Sharing your journey so generously with such grace and humor has been a gift. Thank you, and add this prayer to the many others for a peaceful passage to the next.
ReplyDeleteLouise Marshall
Dave,
ReplyDeleteYou've been in my thoughts and heart so much lately. I love you dearly and treasure the lighthearted times in Trippi's art room. It's incredible the legacy you have left here for all of us. I am truly blessed to have known you.
Emerson said...
"...to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch...to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!"
Dave, you've done so much more. Thank you for sharing your life with so many.
My love to you and your family,
Love,
Monica (Chris) Kaczyk
I can't even begin to explain how you changed my life. You taught me how to see the world, not just through the lens of the camera, but through my own eyes. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to learn from you. You are truly a person that will never be forgotten.
ReplyDeleteAll my love,
Sara Keeler
I will never forget you or your family. The strength and love that you all have shared is truly amazing. When I was still living in Concord it was so nice knowing you all and I truly miss you guys. Your family has always reminded me of the true commitment and the genuine love a family should posses and I will never forget it. I love you all and you will never be forgotten by so many David. You truly are a wonderful person, and you deserve all the peace and love in this world.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Emilie Hardy
Dear David and family-it is with tears in my eyes that I write to tell you what a wonderful person you are-kind caring and loving. The world and all who know you will be losing a very rare and special person. I wish you and yours peace and and an easy passing. You will be greatly missed. Love, Linda Glass
ReplyDeleteDear Mr. Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou have been an inspiration to many including me. Your guidance and gentle way as a teacher helped me through the hard years of highschool. I found an oasis in your classroom and also a love of photography and for that I am forever grateful. I have prayed for you over these past few difficult years and I am filled with sadness after reading your last post. I wish you peace and comfort in knowing how many people's lives you have touched in a positive way and how you have made this world a fuller and more wonderful place. May all the peace of the world be with you and help you and your family through this next chapter.
Love,
Heather Wright
Dearest Dave and Monika,
ReplyDeleteIt is with unbearable sadness that I read this news. Dave, from the really dark places of your diagnosis and repeated treatment attempts, you and Monika have been such a source of inspiration, generosity, and love. I have so much to say but don't know where to begin. You are one of the most amazing people I have ever known. My life and world view has changed just by knowing you. You are really one in a million!
I hope that you are not suffering at all right now and can comfortably enjoy the love of your family and friends. Thank you for sharing your journey with us.
We love you Dave.
Paula (and Doug)
Dearest Dave,
ReplyDeleteI remember you from John's yoga class. We never spoke, and without ever knowing you, I always felt your kindness, compassion, and strength. I'm sending you healing energy for a peaceful passing, surrounded by love.
Peace and blessings to you and your family.
Darcy Marshall
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou inspired and helped so many. I am at a loss of words to tell you just how much you impacted my life and so many others. CCHS and the town in general will never be the same without your presence. You were the only teacher I would have ever gone back to CCHS to see. I am truly honored to have known you, and to have had the classes and conversations I did with you. You will never be forgotten. You're the last person on earth who deserved the pain you have been through in the past years, but you have gone through it with so much strength and power. I hope you find all the peace in the world, you will live on in the hearts of so so many. You are loved, always.
-Amanda S.
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteThank you for being a mentor and a friend-- an amazing example of what it means to be a great artist and, more importantly, a great human being. Like so many of your students, I will never forget the time we spent together, the way you taught me to see the beauty and majesty in things often overlooked, your zeal for life, your constant giving, your way of cutting through the BS and getting at what really matters.
My mind often wanders back to those few weeks we spent making pictures down by the river, and the talks we had. I will always carry those moments with me.
Peace, comfort, and love to you and yours,
Ben Phillippo
CCHS '04
Dave,
ReplyDeleteTo make an 18 year old boy cry is hard work and you have done this. When I look back on my childhood I think about the old Brighton neighborhood where we were all practically family. I don't remember much, since I was just too little. But things I could never forget are the great smile you always had on, your amazing sense of humor and the surplus of kindness you had every minute of every day.
The last time I saw you was at your art show. I hadnt seen you in a couple of years prior to that but when you saw my sister and I you rushed over and hugged both of us,cracking jokes about how much we had grown and how astonished you were, all with that big beautiful smile. Even when the chips were down you were able to laugh and be yourself. Dave you have shaped and molded everyone you know, me included. The love and kindness you show will persist and never be forgotten.
-Zachary Knotts
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI had lost track of how things were going with you after things had been looking good with your test much earlier, but you came to my mind tonight and I wanted to check up on you. Needless to say I was not expecting what I saw in your last post (and all of the others from the past couple of months). My heart is filled with sadness and I do not know what to say other than I am very happy that I had the chance to meet you at Coffer's. It seems like so long ago now.
Looking over all of the comments here made by your students, it is clear that you have accomplished something that many of us will never get close to during our lives, and that is to have a positive impact on so many young people. You have touched the future in a positive way with your life, and to me that is a most important thing. You have done very well my friend.
Long goodbyes are never good, so I will end by wishing you good travels.
Phil Nesmith
Dave,
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen you in years but I feel close to you through your words on these pages. You are the epitome of grace, humor, intelligence and courage. Remember those paper airplanes you made that could fly from one end of the CCHS library to the other? May your final journey soar as gracefully and smoothly as your paper airplanes. Thank you for being the unforgettable person you are. We will forever miss you.
Patt Moser
Dear David and Monika,
ReplyDeleteI just came home from a seminar on the homeopathic treatment of cancer according to the Banerji protocol. In my practice I treat animals at all stages of disease and may be able to offer something. I would need to know what symptoms are being experienced at this time, Monika, maybe you could send me an email. Much love, Alisa Sneade-Koenig
email absneadekoenig@gmail.com
Dave,
ReplyDeleteYou and your family continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. I have been blessed to have been able to share in small segments of your life's journey and to witness the joy you encouraged in others lives. Love Mary O'Connor
David, I know Paul will want to write something directly to you as well, so I'll write just as me right now. Thank so much for being my friend. You are the most positive person I know. You are a light in this world, and I am so so sorry to lose you. I love your humor, kindness, your insight, your work, your full-out-all-you-can-give teaching and parenting, your love for Monica, and the happiness you've always shared with me. I will miss you so much.
ReplyDeleteI wish you peace and love, my friend.
Anne
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteWhen we send our beloved children out in to the world, you are the exact person that we hope and pray will find them. From one parent to another, I thank you for helping our Ali to finally see her talent, beauty and worth. What a gift to our family.
Love,
Liz Crowley
Hey Dave,
ReplyDeleteMurph filled me in on your current situation, and just want to send my love and deepest respect.
Heh, at MassArt you inadvertantly taught me to go after what you really want in life when you were pursuing Monica, who was way outta your league. Ha Ha.
Also, you've brought so much humor into the world. Really, that's the best armor we have in this absurd temporal plane.
You will be greatly missed by Lisa and Me.
Peace,
Ted VanLiew
Dave,
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing, while living with your illness you shared with us courage, optimism, humor and strength and now dignity in you final chapters.
Thank you for reminding me what is important in life.
XO
Kathy Sullivan
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteThroughout the time I was so lucky to have with you in your photography class, I learned far more than I ever imagined I would. I could tell you all that I have learned about photography but more than anything, you have taught me what it means to be strong. As students rush from class to class, visibly worried about tests, homework, and other insignificant dilemmas, you stand strong. You laugh, you smile, you joke every day. I will never forget that. What you have taught me is not something that I pack up in my backpack after class, nor something that I see only through the lense of a camera. I take what you have taught me everywhere I go. Every day I think of your strength and I try to be strong. Thank you for everything you have taught me. So now, Prifti, be strong. You are forever the bravest and most inspirational person I know. I will never forget you.
Russell Walton
Here's to you Dave Prifti, one of the most funny, smart, sincere and honest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. Much love to you Moni and to the kids. Garry
ReplyDeleteYou were such a positive influence during my time in high school, and were the sole reason I walked at graduation. I have never met anyone whose outlook I so admired. Your positivity radiates from you, and every time I see you is a joy. I am so grateful for each of the times we have bumped into each other around town over the years (even when you snuck up on me), and only wish they had been more frequent. The impact you have had on so many of us is no small achievement. You are an inspiration to live life to the utmost, and to persevere through the darkest times.
ReplyDeleteLove always, and the best to your family,
Hannah Butera
Dave-You have done so much good in your life, that I hope you know that those of us who are temporarily still here will do the rest of what you may have wanted. Your influence as a good man and a creative force will live on. You will, in so many ways, never be absent. And we will be a supportive community for Monika. We are all on the path of returning to the stream where, we'll all be one.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to exhale when the times come, and let your heart be filled with peace and love.
I'm so grateful to have had many wonderful times with you. Only the biggest love for you.
Chris Radant
dear dave and monika,
ReplyDeleteour lives intersected, what? 30 years ago! dave, i just remembered the nickname you had for my daughter cameron. "camster the human hamster"! i've gotta say that you've always struck me as a guy with an unusually positive spirit. never got a mean or jealous vibe off of you. can't say the same for that little dog you guys used to have. nipping at everybody. sort of the anti-dave. i shouldn't say that, you guys undoubtedly loved that little fella.
so i'd have to put a lot in your "pros" column. if anybody ever had something for the "anti" column, i never heard about it. dave, you're leaving a lot of admirers, me among them.
monika, this can't be an easy time. when you're ready to visit the old country again and you want to make a side trip down to berlin, we'd love to have you as out guest.
lots of love, jeff
Hi David,
ReplyDeleteI carry you in my heart.
Peace and love to you, Monika, Amanda, and Lucas,
Mark Steinmetz
David, Monika, Amanda and Lucas,
ReplyDeleteYour family is such a beacon of warmth, kindness and love for all that have been blessed to know you.
My prayers for a peaceful passage to you, dear David. You have touched so many.
May God and the earth spirits carry you in their hands to another adventure.
All my blessings,
Ellen, Alex and Nikki
Dear Dave, Monika, Amanda and Lucas,
ReplyDeleteI'm holding all of you in my heart. Dave, like so many others, I too have been touched by your exuberant energy. I remember, for example, you telling me about how you spent a year or more getting up at dawn every morning to go take pictures. You grabbed life by the short hairs and didn't let go. But now life is letting go of you, for which I am so sorry. I hope I face my own end with as much grace and dignity and forthrightness as you have shown.
I wish you peace.
Love,
Pam Swing
Dear Dave,
ReplyDeleteI want to say that when I think of the early years of my life, one of the first things that pops into my mind is your giant grin and amazingly funny sense of humor. Your love of life is inspiring and your "live everyday to its fullest" attitude is something that I will always remember and try to apply to my own attitude on life. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. You are very much loved and will be very much missed.
May peace and love follow you wherever you go,
Casey Knotts
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteOf all the teachers I've ever had, all the people I've ever known, you are the last one I thought I would have had to say goodbye to. Whether it's your wisdom, your warmth, or your innate ability to put someone in their place while making them laugh, you always seemed invincible. Like the ideal person, someone every one of your students, colleagues, and friends strove to be more like.
I can't think of another person who has touched so many lives in such a profound way. On behalf of your students, thank you for making us find and cultivate our own photographic identities. Thank you for telling us stories about your life. Thank you for emphasizing the importance of dignity and self-respect over getting a good grade. Thank you for being you and making us be more us.
Thank you, Prifti. You are so wonderful. We love you.
Joanna Nix
Hi David,
ReplyDeleteMurph gave us the update and we just wanted to let you know that even though we are on the other side of the planet, our hearts and thoughts are, and shall remain, with you and Monika and your family over the coming days.
As I read the posts here now, and have read them periodically over the last year or so, I am truly filled with respect and admiration by how much of yourself you have shared with others in your life and by how many lives you have touched over your lifetime. I am particularly inspired by how many people have been influenced by you as a teacher and a mentor.
When I think back to our high school years and I try to recall teachers that had any sort of impact at all, and there were precious few, for me, Trippi is just about the only one who comes to mind. He was a guy we would listen to, someone whose opinion we instinctively trusted, whose humor and compassion and toughness we respected, someone we would let be a mentor, a guide.
Thirty plus years later, I am in awe at how much you have become a "Trippi" sort of guy. The kind of guy people intuitively trust and some, perhaps, who may even have even let themselves be guided by you. Guys like that, teachers like that, are few and far between my friend and all I can think to say tonight is this: good for you for becoming and being that kind of guy and leaving such a trail of good behind you.
Thirty years from now, I am confident that there will be many who will look back on their own schools years and think, just as I do, "I can't recall many teachers who truly had a profound affect on me, but there was one guy...I think is name was..... Prifti, yea, that was the guy...."
Good for you Dave, good for you for being "That Guy".
I will miss you very much, I will always have fond memories of you and I will always think of you. My only regret is that my wife and son did not have an opportunity to meet you. However, I'm pretty certain that Murph and I will be sharing plenty of stories with Tenney and Matthew as they get older about our friend Prifti. If we can raise and instill in them just a fragment of your spirit, I think we will have succeeded.
All our love,
Matthew, Jina and Kevin "Auge" Auger

Dave, I am so sad to read this last update. My year living with you guys in Brighton was one of the best years of my life. I am so happy and grateful that I got the chance to live you and be a part of your family for that time, and that we have stayed in touch after. I was telling a friend of mine about you today, and told her that often times after we had hung out and visited or when you had been over to Clive St in JP to have dinner, I had cramps in my cheeks from laughing so hard. I literally needed to massage my cheek muscles! I have missed you all since I moved to Sweden, but still think about you a lot, and regard you as a vital and important part of my life. I will miss you! Stora stora kramar to all four of you! Camilla
ReplyDeletePrifti,
ReplyDeleteYour kindness reached so many, both in and beyond the classroom. You probably don't remember me (I was never in any of your classes, although I always wished I had been), but I'm sure I'm one of many who appreciated your warmth, humor, and clearly genuine interest in people that shone through our brief interactions. You certainly helped me remember to look up and smile at times when I was struggling. Thank you. I wish you peace for your time ahead.
-Sarah (Monk) Thom, CCHS '96
David
ReplyDeleteYou will always be in my heart. You gave me support when I most needed it and extended a friendship I failed too many times to return. You moved me with your art your generosity and your kindness. By far, it was your often blunt honesty wrapped in humor that I appreciate the most. You gave me strength and hope in pursuit of vision, and deep humility to be known by a person such as yourself. My love is with you and Monika and the kids. A happy and -peaceful journey, David. Kathleen
talk is cheap dear one, the vibration of your bigger spirit ripples through us all like a clear bell, like the wet plates that you leave behind.
ReplyDeleteyes we will all be where you are now, that portal, that uncertainty, that trust that a better world is possible.

Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou made me the confident photographer and student that I am today. You were the first teacher to ever tell me that I had a real talent and I can see that now. You were also the only teacher that I ever felt like I could connect to. I will never forget you. Thank you for all that you have done for me.
Love,
Alice Crowley
Peace and prayers to you and your family Dave..
ReplyDeleteI am sad to hear you are going through this.I can see you in your classroom like it was yesterday. Thank you for being a teacher that got students excited, interested and a class people wanted to attend. You will be in my prayers. - Marianne Class of 1996
ReplyDeleteDavid,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the lessons you taught and continue to teach us all through your grace, compassion, humor and dignity. You have made a difference in so many lives and your lessons will continue to live on. We wish you and your family musch love and peace.
Pam and Paul Ressler
Mr Prifti,
ReplyDeleteThank you for being such a wonderful photography teacher. I was so lucky to be in your class and experience first hand your wisdom, passion, and kindness. I will never forget how much energy you brought to each day even though you were not always feeling one hundred percent. Your pure selflessness is so admirable and I want to thank you for it. I am fortunate to have a portfolio of photographs from your class to keep and whenever I pull it out I will think of you. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. You deserve all of the peace in the world.
With love,
Josie Morrison
Prifti- my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family! I am so grateful to have been one of the many people who were so lucky to have had you as a part of my life! Although I am certainly missing the artistic gene that my sister was so lucky to have and develop under your teaching, I still had so much fun as your student and later with you as a dear friend to my entire family! Your positive impact on all of the Streeter clan has been immeasurable! May you find peace during this difficult time. Much love to you from all of the Streeters! Xoxo!
ReplyDeleteErin (Streeter) Orpik
Dear Dave,
ReplyDeleteThere is such a huge outpouring of love for you because you have touched so many lives. My memories of you are rich and wonderful; meeting you at Haystack, your last year at Mass Art, how enthusiastic you were about your photos, your courtship with Monica, going off to Yale... Then it was so great to reunite on the softball field, become friends again, seeing the twins born and raising kids at the same time. You are one of the funniest people I know, you always made everyone laugh with your blunt honesty. You will be sorely missed and have inspired all of us with your artwork, and as a teacher, father and friend. Even through your trials, you lived your life with such grace and dignity and kept your sense of humor. You will always live in my heart.
Love to you, Monika, Lucas and Amanda
Linda
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI will always remember you as the kindest (and coolest!) of homeroom teachers, and an ever-welcoming presence in the art department. High school was never easy for me, but you saw a struggling kid and made each day a little better. You were one of those adults who made me think, "I might actually be good at being an adult someday!" at a time when I really needed adults like that in my life. Please know that you will be greatly missed by all whose lives you touched. I wish you every moment of peace and comfort in these next days, and am sure you will find that as you spend time with your wonderful community of family and friends.
With love to you and your family,
Diana Barnes-Brown
CCHS Class of 1996
The CCHS art room was the highlight of my high school education. I could always count on you and Renee to be wearing smiles and to greet us with humor and a contagious love of art. Plus, you let us indulge in George Clinton and Parliament's funkadelic beats for months at a time. Now that I am a high school art teacher and have a different perspective, your infinite patience and gentle approach have moved to the forefront of my memories. Thank you for being an enduring inspiration.
ReplyDeletePeace and love to you and yours.
Tracie (class of 1996)
prifti,
ReplyDeleteReading through the responses, I feel as though you were sent here with a brief but important message about life and art. You have been and continue to be such an inspiration and hero to so many, including me! We are all so blessed to have been under your guide and presence. The transfer emulsion lesson changed my view of art..forever. It was a turning point in my ideas and created a chunk of my portfolio that got me into mass art, sending me on my way to this path. Thank you for being the wonderful inspiration for that. Always positive and patient. Your legacy will forever be with cchs students. I'm so lucky to have the opportunity to thank you after all these years. Safe travels a you outgrow us, and I hope to see you again someday. Peace and Love, sarah stone cchs2006
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI was so lucky to start my teaching career with you. I am a better teacher and person for having worked with you. Thank you for your inspiration, warmth and humor. All love to you and your family.
Spence
Dear Prifti,
ReplyDeleteWe've been best friends since the first time I heard you laugh. You've got that smirking, bedeviled, out of the corner of your eye grin that says the world is fucked up and I love every minute of it!
Do you ever think to shave? I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you without at least a day’s stubble on your chin – not to mention the sloppy shirt half out of your pants and the foggy glasses, half-crocked on your head. How Monika was so attracted to you, I’ll never know?
And thank God I didn’t get a close look at you running by me naked when I was transfixed the naked woman behind you that fateful year at Haystack that lead our lives in different (but good) directions.
We had the many softball years together with those how knew was this a game of fun for fun’s sake and those who thought that co-ed softball was a game to win or be damned.
Then there’s that ART thing we do. We were never going to be rich and famous, or even make a blip on the Who’s Who in art, but we both have a deep passion to make things -and that’s what it is all about after all.
Like those who commented before me, I’m stumbling around trying to say that I really, truly LOVE you! And though I don’t know where you are going, I know I will follow in a more humble and curious way, believing we’ll be back, better than ever, in this ever lasting life.
Love, Dean
Dear Dave,
ReplyDeleteI know no words at this moment can truly express my thoughts and prayers about and for you. I only hope that you truly realize how you affected people's lives. We are all like a piece of art...impacted and molded by our experiences and personal contacts. Without question, your compassion, sincerity, humor, and guidance have a big impact on so many lives. Even during this most difficult time, your blog gave us answers and pushed us to question ourselves and our purpose. You never asked for anything from others, rather you gave more of yourself.
I believe our journey will continue beyond our time here now. Why? Because like when you work on a piece of your art, your spirit and soul can never be truly defined or completed. There is always "a little room for more interpretation and fine tuning"!!!
I look forward to seeing more of your work in a day or in a 1000 years!!!
Love,
Doug K.
Dear Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI remember back in my Sophomore year, in 2009, when I had you for my photo class. I took that class with you, not only because I love photography, but because all I had heard about from friends who had been through your class and people who had not, that I had to take a class with David Prifti before I graduate from CCHS. On those instructions I signed up for Intro to Photo hoping to have you as a teacher, I got lucky and was lucky enough to have you as a teacher and a mentor. I know that you and I were never good friends, though I have lived near you my whole life just down the street at Rideout. Anyways, I seem to have digressed as is so easy to do when having a conversation with you. Mostly I would like to say how much you affected me, you have the ability to look at the beauty in everything in the world. I use to bring some of the crappiest photos to you for you to look at and critique, and you were always able to find something nice in the photo, whether it was the exposure, or the angle, or the fluke ghosting that appeared, whatever it was you were able to find the beauty in the photo. Recently I have been looking through what of your portfolio is available on the internet, and it is amazing how you look at everyone and everything. Either way, I just wanted you to know how much of an impact you have had not only on me, but everyone at CC and in the community. Thank you for teaching me, and opening my eyes. I know you will be back to CC for many years to come, in both body and spirit.
Thank you, and Love,
Josh A.
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine this world without you... Your amazing Grace and Spirit will forever live in the halls of CCHS, the Stands at the Hockey Rink, and in the homes of all who were privileged to know you. I can only hope to heed the advice of Dr. Weinstein at the CCHS '09 graduation when he said, "Live your life like Dave Prifti"... It has been an honor and a privilege to know you. You and your family are in my heart and my prayers... Godspeed...
Nancy Ryan
Dave,
ReplyDeleteThings I have learned from you:
- Fresh eggs are way yellow-er and cook better than store bought.
- Once you name a chicken, you cannot eat it.
- Junk is rusty...Good Junk has patina.
- Art is created from passion. Craft is your passion perfected. Art & Crafts is something Girl Scout Leaders do with popsicle sticks and pipe cleaners.
- Collecting skeleton keys is fun (my collection is still very small).
- If you have to have radiators, ornate ones are beautiful.
- Cavemen were in vogue way before Geiko made them mainstream.
- The traffic cone from your truck had a better vacation than me. It also looked better in vacation pictures!
- Eagle Scouts Rule!
- Ugly can be made beautiful with the right light and extra time in the darkroom.
- Very few people in this world will ever be as loved and respected by as many individuals as you.
Love to you, Monika, Amanda and Lucas

Prifti,
ReplyDeleteIt is an honor and a privilege to have met you. One of the reasons we choose to look in Concord when moving from Maine was a write up I found on line about you and your teaching style. We wanted that for our children - a teacher so enthused with passion for his art and so in love with his students. We moved to Concord in 2008 and I know I have told you this many times but your photography class and you helped Shannon through the difficult transition to a new school twice the size of her old school in sophomore year no less. She went on to embrace photography, opting her senior year to student teach with you last semester when most seniors would have loved to have stayed asleep a bit longer. She was home a few weeks ago and wanted to visit you but saw from the blog it was not possible. In Harvard Square she found a book on pin-hole cameras which she got specifically for you to have as an 'extra' explanation of pin-hole structure, a tactile compliment to your verbal. Her youngest sister is saddened never to have had you as a teacher –unfortunately, photo didn't fit in her freshmen year (2010-11). Thank you for all your time and energy - you are our knight in shining armor with an extra fine patina and infectious sense of zest for life. To paraphrase JK Rowling: after a life well lived, what is death but the next adventure. Wishing you a peaceful voyage. - Love, prayers and energy to you and your family. We hold you forever in our hearts. Namaste.
Kim, Ted, Shannon & Elle McNamara
Dearest Dave,
ReplyDeleteI don't know how to express the deep sadness I feel, but I just want you to know how grateful I am to have known you as a friend over so many years.I have always admired your robust embrace of all that surrounds you, your passion for art, your family, your garden, your chickens and all else that has brought such rich rewards to you, and then back to your family and all that know you. We are all so enriched and inspired by you. You have always followed your heart, and I have always admired that in you since you were knee deep in the streams with your view camera at MassArt.You have lived such a fulfilled life and you will continue to fill the hearts of so many behind you in so many ways for a long time to come. I will always think of you with much love and affection always and forever, and wish you many more fabulous Prifti adventures in the world to come.
With much love and peace to you,
Alice
Prifti -
ReplyDeleteI want to speak for the decades worth of Concord-Carlisle Teachers Association members that were brought warmly into the "wolves den" (inside CCTA reference) by you and your family and your home. It's not just that you offered your home for our twice-yearly gatherings - anyone could have done that. It was the style with which it was done. A first-year teacher recalls you in your kitchen telling her: "Do whatever your want. This is your home, too..." and she was just amazed. The guitar-playing, the trampoline, the chips and beer, the chickens, administrators letting their hair down - it was all so perfectly and expertly and effortlessly done.
The importance of these gatherings and the style with which they were held should not be underestimated. With all the trials and tribulations that the CCTA has gone through over the years, you've always provided us with a way to just let go and "be" with each other.
Thank you so much,
- a devoted CCTA member
Dear Mr. Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI thought of you the other day, and then came across your blog this morning. I am overwhelmed. What a beautiful thing you and your wife have done for your loved ones with this blog! I have thought of you often over the years, since I was a student of yours in high school. I've never told you this, but I'm pretty sure you and your photography class were the only reasons I survived that time of my life. You were a grounding and inspirational force for me during very difficult times. You were teaching photography and saving lives! Your generosity, support, and enthusiasm allowed me the freedom to explore my relationship with the world around me, without fear or judgement. I still have some prints from your class hanging on the wall at my parents house. I have never forgotten you, and never will. Thank you, for being you, and being there for me, even if you didn't know it at the time! You are a gift in this life.
With much love and gratitude, Lisa
Mr. Prifti, I don't even know if you remember me, the shy exchange student from Italy. I've been thinking of you a lot because I admired you for your strenght and enthusiasm even in such bad times! Thank you for what you taught me. You'll always be in my heart.
ReplyDeleteValentina
Dearest Prifti,
ReplyDeleteThanks for being such a wonderful, warm, wise-cracking and charismatic teacher/friend to so many of us!
Your life is truly a gift that you have shared so fully. You inspire us to find joy in the simplest things like cavemen and chickens.
Blessings to you, Monika, Amanda and Lucas
Peace and love,
Priscilla and family
I'm holding you in my heart, dear friend, and doing a mental spin of your prayer wheel to send those atoms of love you have generated so intensely around the world. As Abraham Lincoln said of a young fallen soldier, it's not the years in a life that counts, it's the life in one's years, and you have packed a lot of life in the years given you. Bless you and thank you for all you have given us and our girls.
ReplyDeleteWith love and our prayers for peace in this next time, Dinny and John
Prifti, you are an amazing person! I just wanted to let you know that you have the city of London praying for you,or at least those in Westminster Abbey. That's a lot of people. Also, there's a candle in Westminster Abbey lit just for you. I think you would love some of my pictures from Spain, so if you get the urge to take a look, they're on Facebook. Anyways, I just wanted to thank you for being the best teacher I've ever had, and a great friend.
ReplyDeletePeace and love,
Elise
Mr. Prifti --
ReplyDeleteYou have always been there for your students, both in the classroom and outside of it. I know you were there for Andy and Katie and we will be forever grateful to you for that. You are loved and will be remembered by more people than you know. We wish peace and comfort during this time to you and your family -- Liz & Scott Hopkinson
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteWe want to tell you that you were a wonderful influence in both Lisa and Erik's lives. Thank you for all you have done for them, and so many others. Our thoughts are with you and your family.
Love,
Ralphie and Kari Shaner
Hi, man.
ReplyDeleteListen, I don't really know what to say here. Nancy told me this morning and... well it sucks. It sucks worse than anything so far. I'm really going to miss you.
Remember at the very beginning when you gave out the surveys to all of us? What would you die for. That was the question that stuck with me. My ultimate concern. i don't really know what it is. But I'll find out. And then, well then I'll just have to find some way to tell you. People are never really gone, you know. Somewhere they're somewhere. whether it's our heats, our minds or our memories everyone is somewhere. never really gone. And i know that you'll always be here. Not here, on the nonphysical land of the internet but in my mind. I'm going to miss you. And it's going to suck never seeing you again.
Lots of love,
Jackie Luckner.
I miss you.
Dear Prifti,
ReplyDeleteSome of my best memories from CCHS are from your classroom! You challenged my view of the world and helped me to see beauty in the unexpected and different. I still love to take pictures and when I catch a poignant moment or beautiful landscape, I find myself thinking, "Prifti would be impressed!"
When I took education classes, our professors would often ask us to think of a teacher that made a difference in our own education. Your passion for photography and art, your love of teaching, your ability to connect with students, and your wonderful sense of humor make you stand out! I hope that I am able to have half of the impact on my students' lives as you have had on yours.
With much peace and love for you & your family,
Jennie (Granato) Quaresima '99
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI want you to know that you have been a big inspiration... and one of the most influential teacher I have had. Thank you for everything. My prayers are with you and your family.
Love,
Parissa
Dave,
ReplyDeleteI have always been so inspired by your presence in the building--your unfailing good cheer, your professionalism, & the love & respect your students express for you make you the teacher I hope to be someday. You & your family are in my prayers.
Dora Golding
David, Monika, you have so many good friends for good reasons. Wishing you and your kids the best. Warmest, Henry
ReplyDeleteHi Prifti,
ReplyDeleteRemember when I always came in late for A block photo? I guess I should have taken you up on that ride to school in the mornings. Now, I'm never late to photo. The second I get in A1, I drop my backpack and head straight to the dark room to claim a spot. Because of you, I have found a passion. Because of you, I now look at the world in a different way: through a lens. Because of you, no one who has had the privilege of knowing you will ever be the same. I wouldn't have discovered my love for photography if it hadn't been for you, Prifti. I will be taking pictures for the rest of my life, thinking of you with every click of the shutter. I miss your sense of humor, and your ability to be a friend as well as a teacher. I have never liked a teacher as I have liked you. I miss you so much. I remember that one time when we were discussing religion, and we both agreed that we were agnostic. So, in honor of your agnosticism, have a great time in your next life as an eagle, or in heaven, as a spirit on earth, or in nothingness. And, as someone commented from above somewhere, take lots of pictures.
Love from Pip
Dear David,
ReplyDeleteI was alerted to you being in hospice on Friday. I have since read your blog from the beginning, and am so sad about the cruelty of your illness to shorten your time with your family and friends and all who care about you. Seeing you at the post office in September, such a short time ago, you looked years younger and full of life. Your words about my daughter, Becca, were so insightful and loving.
As Becca's mom, I want to thank you for being a special teacher during her CCHS life (so long ago it seems!) inspiring her artistically, and helping her to develop the tools to see the world in her own special way. Her camera is still an important part of her world. I want to thank you for letting Becca into your home to babysit for your then young children, and for caring about her. She is becoming quite a young woman who is facing the world head on.
I want to thank you for sharing this harrowing experience of yours. It is a great act of generosity and it is heartwarming to see all the love and support that has and is being given to you.
I want to give you my love, and wish you peace and comfort while you await the next big adventure. Paula
David...
ReplyDeleteYou were a wonderful friend when the Circle turned on me. I'll never forget it. You have also shown enormous courage and always remained positive through your illness. I can assure you that you are going to a place where there is contentment and love and joy surrounding you. I will pray earnestly for a peaceful passage
God Bless You.
Christopher, your fellow facilitator.
Not a day has gone by in the past 30 years that i haven't thought about you. You will never know how much i have loved you from afar. God Bless you and your family
ReplyDeleteDear Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI was incredibly lucky to be your student for my entire junior year and your dedication and enthusiasm made me look forward to learning more about photography and becoming the best that I could. Your passion for art was infectious and it made me want to be better every day. I will never pick up a camera without thinking of you. You truly are an incredible person and I will never forget how much you inspired, and impacted me. You and your family are in my prayers, and I wish you peace and happiness forever.
With love and gratitude,
-Victoria Ware
Dear David,
ReplyDeleteI know that there is nothing that I can say, that hasn't been said by many of your friends but I just want you to know that over the years you have always had a place in my heart, and it will continue to be there for a long time. I will never forget you and how you have made the world a little kinder and a nicer place to live. My prayers are with you and your family.
Sandy Dionis
Goodbye dear David-Beloved-By All.
ReplyDeleteThe comments of those who have been lucky enough to have known you- teachers, students, fellow-artists- everyone in the community and beyond-are truly awe-inspiring.
You made us all feel special.
Hugs and smiles
Joannie Hilton
Dear Prifti,
ReplyDeleteOn behalf of my entire family, thank you for reminding each one of us what it means to be a creator, a craftsman, a student, and a friend. Your guidance and friendship throughout my CCHS years was very important to me and was instrumental in shaping the person I try to be each day. My brother Mike still speaks fondly of the many movie nights and the amazing connection he shared with you.
Your creative energy when you rolled up your sleeves to learn the art of stone and worked amongst our craftsmen on your very own kitchen countertops was an inspiration that lives on in our shop today.
You are one-of-a-kind Prifti. I feel privileged to have known you, to have learned from you, to have laughed with you, and to be one of the countless lives you have touched and changed with the exceptional gift you shared with each of us.
My prayers and the prayers of my entire family are with you and your family as you take this next step in your journey. God Bless You.
With Gratitude,
John Kilfoyle
Prifti - it's safe to say that I would not be the person I am today had we never met. You taught me more than you know, about art, humor, and respect for people and their differences. I became your student 22 years ago, and am proud to say I am still learning from you at this very moment. Prayers to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteMike Hollywood - CCHS '93
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteI am going to miss walking through your class hearing your sarcasm and humor. I believe you really brightened everyones day, everyday. No matter how tired, or how boring the day has been, your energy just made that all go away and being in the photo room was one of the best hours during the day. I really appreciate all you have taught me about photography, although I only took the class for a semester, I feel that I learned a huge amount about photography. You`ve inspired me to keep taking pictures and I will always remember you and your class. You are one of my favorite teachers and I believe you have inspired my class, and all the classes you have taught with your passion for photography. My prayers go out to you and your family.
peace and love,
nicole voysest
Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family, Dave.
ReplyDeleteYou singularly inspired me when I began my years teaching here in Concord, and you continue to inspire me well beyond the sphere of teaching and into the business of living live itself.
Clearly your imprint here is indelible -- you have made the world a uniquely better place.
With love, joy, tears, and an appreciative heart -- safe home.
Cheryl Shea.
Wow, Dave, you have shared so much inspiration, joy, perspective, love, guidance, and humor with so many. I hope all of our loving reflections will help you to follow your inner light, peacefully, to your next calling.
ReplyDeleteThank you for touching Rosie's life so indelibly and inspiring her abiding love for photography. Though circumstances didn't work out for Colin and you to connect, your scent has him heading straight for the darkroom at college.
May all the Buddhas be with you, Monika, Amanda, and Lucas now and help you to feel calm in your hearts and joy for all that has gone and is yet to come. Much love.
Cherrie Corey
much love, Cherrie
Dave-The hardest thing about leaving CC was leaving behind my colleagues...dear friends, really. You were one, of course, and I have missed your smile and warmth and humor. You made standing at a prom or playing poker at Sheila's livelier, funnier, more...just more. You added to very occasion, Dave, and I will miss your company. You are carrying so much love and peace with you, my friend. -Diane Tomaz
ReplyDeleteEven though I never had you at CC, your presence was always felt throughout our school. Thank you so much for everything you've done -- I know your blog has been an inspiration for my dad and for so many others. Sending the best wishes to you and Monika and your whole family...

Dave, you are a unique spirit. From your days as a visiting artist to those as department chair, you brought warmth, humor, appropriate irreverence, a love and respect for photography and indeed all art, to CCHS and made it a better place in which to learn and to teach. A special thanks for all your help and encouragement as I ventured back into my own work with a camera. My many images of you are engraved in their album in my mind and heart. With affection, Henry
ReplyDeleteDear Dave,
ReplyDeleteIn my mind's eye I see the mischief in your eyes, the warmth of your smile, the pride and pleasure every time we spoke of Amanda or Lucas, and your deep love and connection with Monika. Your art, teaching, and coaching of colleagues are part of your accomplished persona. More recently, it has been your courage and grace that add to your legacy for your family and friends, as well as unknown others whose lives you have touched. With affection and love as you journey on this phase of your life, Susan xo
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteWe both know I rarely did work in photo, but yours was still the class I learned the most in. I learned about myself and who I want to be from you. You are not only the best teacher I’ve ever had, but also the best man I’ve ever known. I can’t adequately express how much you’ve impacted my life, so a simple thank you will have to suffice for now. Thank you for always making me smile. Thank you for teaching me how to do tintypes, which you assured me would get me into college and get me a husband. Thank you for always giving me a hug when I needed it. Thank you for teaching me how to slide when you weren’t even my softball coach. Thank you for your endlessly entertaining stories. Thank you for being the one teacher I was comfortable talking to about anything. Thank you for taking our class into the tunnels and out to Starbucks. Thank you for allowing me to be myself in your classroom, when I was too shy to be myself anywhere else at school. Thank you for some of my best memories from high school. Thank you for being more than just a teacher, thank you for being my friend. Thank you so much for being a part of my life and inspiring me in every way.
This is only the beginning of the things I’m thankful for, because you are so amazing in every way and have done so much for my friends, the entire CCHS and Concord communities, and me. I think about you everyday and I aspire to be like you. It is my life goal to be awe-inspiring, just like you are.
All my love,
Shannon Galgay

Prifti,
ReplyDeleteYou are an amazing person and I am so happy that I got to learn from and spend time with you over the years. You always bring so much spirit and passion to everything you do and inspire those around you to do the same. I know that I and many others are better people for knowing you. You are in my thoughts.
Love always,
Rachel Robey
Prifti,
ReplyDeleteAlthough we've never met, I feel like I know you through our mutual friends, your beautiful wet plate work and your difficult journey that you've shared here. You inspired me to start my own blog when I faced a tricky health situation last year. Your strength, honesty and perseverance as you've navigated unknown waters has been a lesson to everyone who has followed along. May your journey to whatever lies next be peaceful and filled with love. I have few regrets in life, but will always regret that we never had the chance to meet.

ReplyDeleteHi David - When I hear your rooster crow I am hoping that he is still entertaining you. I pray for you to have peace and comfort.

Prifti,
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the one thing people at CC can agree on is you. You have connected everyone in this community and brought students to be truly passionate about something that they can have for the rest of their lives. Even before you were my teacher, I wondered if you'd like my photos. I'm only jealous I didn't have you for more than a week as my teacher, I always wanted to be one of the Prifti students. However, even in that short amount of time, and ages before it, your focus and expertice on photography, as well as life, impressed me. In that short time, I learned the difference between taking pictures and making photos. My hope and love to you and your family.

we remembered each other, you, me, and monika.when we met. we will always remember before we came to the place beneath. i can feel your 'light' memory the world matrix has changed. a greater humanity is claiming responsible action for a better world. your laughter is ringing like a tibetan bowl meditation. namaste. you are the light, now.
ReplyDeleteDavid - The grace, courage, humor, and honesty you've shown us all as you have moved on and through the recent chapters of your life have sealed your role as a teacher, rabbi, wise one. Thanks for your example, for your openness, for your wisdom. Love, safe home, and may we all continue to hold one another in the palm of our hands. With love and gratitude for a life well lived - Jan McGInn
ReplyDeletemr prifti,
ReplyDeletei have been thinking of you - i even dreamed that we had a last, happy conversation. you were surrounded by friends and family. i know this is the reality. this is an incredible gift you have given us here - thank you for all you have taught us.

p.s. you remain the one teacher who gave me detention. i deserved it!
Dear Prifti,
ReplyDeleteSaying 'thank you' is insufficient to convey my gratitude for the positive impact on the thousands of students you inspired. You didn't just teach us how to frame photographs - you taught us how to depict our perception of the world.
Thank you for allowing us to tell our story.
Michaela Corr
Some of my most resilient memories of being a teenager were the hours I spent in your class. We were your first students, and I'd bet that every one of us love you and think of you to this day. While not all of us carried on and became professionals, we all still aspire to create things that would meet your measure. Your enthusiasm and support and empathy for everyone - from angsty teens on up - is a sight to behold and something that will carry on forever. So so much love to you and your lovely family.

ReplyDeleteKnow that everyone at CCHS is thinking about you and sending their love your way.

As a brilliant beacon of inspiration, your presence will be felt for generations. Gravity can only hold earth-bound angels for so long….and we expect the heavens will become all the more radiant upon your return. An honor and a great privilege to know you.
ReplyDeleteMuch love to you and your family.

Dear Prifti,
ReplyDeleteEven though I haven't seen you in a few years, I've been getting updates from my mom and thinking of you often.
My desire to get into the film industry came about before we met, but I consider my two years of taking your photography classes as a crucial step towards that goal. You not only taught me the technical aspects of photography, but also helped me gain confidence in my abilities as an artist. You always felt as much a friend as a teacher, which is a rare thing, especially at the high school level. My love of photography continues, and to this day I can still hear your voice in my head, "No squirrel pictures!" :)
Sincerest thanks for teaching me to believe in myself and that my art is worth creating and sharing with others. It is a priceless gift that you've given to so many people. I will never forget you.
Much love, peace and until we meet again,
Elizabeth MacSwan, class of '98
Dear David,
ReplyDeleteYou are in my thoughts and prayers. You and your amazing be remembered and serve as an inspiration for all of us. Love and peace, Mari Seder

ReplyDeleteI still remember the day during my senior year where you told me that my path does not need to look like everyone elses. That I should not get so stressed over college, getting a job, and following the fast track that so many people use to measure success. You told me to follow my own path and go where my heart takes me, and as cliche as that sounds it is some of the best advice I have ever received. Not everyone who goes to CC is destined for Ivy's or a high paid job in the city (to many of our parent's dismay) and you helped me realize that. You gave me so much knowledge over the three years that I got to know you. I hope you realize how many people's lives you have touched and how much of an incredible, unique, talented and special individual you are. I will always carry your memory with me.
You are by far the best teacher I have ever had and will ever have. you reach out to kids and impact people on levels that not many others are able to. This world will be a sadder place without you. Thank you for all that you have given to us all. I wish we could have you for longer. I love you and will miss you dearly. Rest easy.
Love,
Caroline Casey
